History
of Highland
When this fine school
was to open its doors in 1963, its name was to be Gate City High
School since Pocatello is known as the Gate City to the West. The students who were to attend this school
voiced a dislike for the chosen name. The
school board of District #25 agreed to allow the student body of
this new school to vote upon a name. After
several suggestions, including Harriman High School, Alameda High
School, and of course Highland High School, the latter name was
selected. Highland High School came into existence. The
next step was the selecting of school colors and a mascot. Black
and white, symbolizing power with peace, were chosen. Picking a mascot proved even easier. What was a symbol of power and authority which
would be comfortable in the highlands? Why,
the Mighty Ram, of course. Later,
the Lassies and Scotties were added to Highland’s traditions, and
the school eventually evolved to the mighty institution it is today.
Highland’s history
has been a continuous story of success. Since
Highland's opening in 1963, the fighting Rams have been state champions
in virtually every athletic endeavor imaginable. HHS’s academic record is outstanding as well,
as many students receive awards and scholarships from sources in
the community and beyond. Highland’s
student body has pride in its school, and this spirit is what makes
this school upon the hill a place respected by all who know its
history. Any student, past
or present, should be proud to call themselves a Highland Ram.

Highland Strength & Conditioning
Highland
High School has adopted the belief that strength and
conditioning is the backbone of our athletic programs.
Our number one goal is to make sure our athletes are
strong, healthy, and competitive. |
 |
We want to create a winning atmosphere through student/athletes
who are stronger, who are better conditioned, and who
have a positive attitude. Our strength and conditioning
class strives to get the most out of the athlete mentally
and physically; at the same time, developing an athlete
who will perform in the classroom as well as on the playing
field. Athletes understand that winning is not only
a tradition at Highland, but it is also something to
take pride in and preserve for the future athletes and
programs. Strength and conditioning raises the bar of
expectations for all who demand plenty from themselves. |
Advanced P.E. (Weight Room) |
The Advanced P.E class is designed to
involve as many students as possible who are participating
in a sport or cheerleading activity for the benefit of
strength training throughout the year. There are many
advantages to having a year-round strength training program
for high school athletes: |
1) injury prevention 2) in-season strength and cardiovascular
development
3) elevated self--confidence
|
In general, a stronger athlete
(no matter what sport) is a better athlete. |
The program at
HHS is based on four days of lifting a week and one day
of cardiovascular work. The lifting days are centered
around the following core lifts:
1)Bench Press 2) Parallel Squat 3) Power Clean 4) Push
Press 5) Hang Snatch
Auxiliary lifts that include universal machines and
dumb bells are also included in the workout. The cardiovascular
days will vary with distance running, speed ladder, plyometric
box jumps, boxing, jump rope, and softball. The program
is set up as a total lifting program that includes the
needs of all sports rather than just one sport. Many
of our athletes play more than one sport during the year
and the transition from one sport to another is accommodated.
The overall philosophy of the lifting program is to
prepare younger athletes for an opportunity to compete
for a championship during their years of varsity competition.
Therefore, some sacrifices are made to have freshman
and sophomores weight train during some game days in
their respective sports. As a staff, we feel that total
development of the athlete can be achieved better if
the younger students don’t sit out on every freshman
or sophomore competition day.
Younger athletes are usually only permitted one day
off each week during their competition season. Furthermore,
varsity athletes are only permitted to take days off
when regional competition occurs or when state tournaments
are in progress.

Right….What is right with Highland? We are the
only 5A school in Pocatello that plays Idaho’s best
large school competition. Our football team has been
in the state championship game 11 of the last 13 years.
Attitude….It all starts
with attitude. We instill a positive atmosphere at
Highland that not only affects our teams and what they
do on the field but also what they do in the classroom
and in everyday life.
Means….By what means do
we achieve our goals? We are a school who wants to
play for conference and state championships every year.
Through tremendous work ethic and dedication on the
part of the coaching staff and the players of each
individual program, we achieve our aim.
Success….There are no shortcuts
to success. Our tradition of winning has been
built on hard work, dedication, and determination
on the part of many. We hope that our future RAMS
have the discipline and character to continue what
has taken years to build.
Highland High School Fight Song & Loyalty
Highland High School
Fight Song
It’s for Highland we are fighting,
It’s for colors black and white,
As our Ram goes out for us
We will fight with all our might.
As our team brings in the victory
On the field or in the gym,
Highland’s team will be victorious
And the trophies will come in.
It’s for victory, honor, valor
And the prize we run the test,
As our school up on the hill will
Always be far past the rest.
And the victories we take humbly,
Losing comes without regret,
And we do all these things gladly
For our Highlands best school yet. |
Loyalty
Highland we’re loyal to you
Highland we’ll stand
beside you
To the black and white we’re true
Highland we’re
true for Highland
First place a victory best place
Our Rams will
show the best taste
Victory is ours forever
Ours for Highland High.
Highland upon the hill our
Highland and Rams
are best still
We are the students always
Loyal and true.
And as for learning and honest labor
Our Rams
will stand the measure
The best in all the land
We know is Highland |
